Until Gin dissolves into light particles and Hotaru is left hugging the yukata that he was wearing as she falls to the ground, crying. They embrace briefly, both just happy to be in each others' arms. Hotaru rushes into his arms, getting the chance to finally touch him. Knowing that he has mere minutes to live, Gin calls Hotaru to him. The magic which preserves Gin's body is obliterated due to the contact and Gin starts to disintegrate into glowing shards. Gin catches him by his arm and prevents the fall. Gin takes Hotaru to the Yokai Festival of Spirits where they are walking together when a human boy who snuck into the festival rushes by. Their bond grow stronger and they grow closer with each passing summer. Hotaru always comes back to the forest every summer to visit Gin without fail. Gin waits for summer to come as well as Hotaru, as it is the only time the two can be together. During the other seasons, Hotaru has to move back to her original home away from the forest. Hotaru can only meet Gin during the summer, when she stays at her Uncle's house. Gin helped Hotaru out of the forest to search for her Uncle's house. Alone and frightened, she cries, attracting Gin's attention.
Little Hotaru is lost in the forest during the summer when visiting her Uncle's home. After meeting Hotaru, Gin looked forward to every day in the summer as he would spend time with his new found friend. Since then, Gin lived in solitary with only his fellow spirits as his company- that is, until Hotaru came and got lost in the forest. Plot Īt the beginning, Gin was abandoned by his parents and left in the Spirit Forest, where the other spirits took him in and gave him the mask he wears to this day. The forest lord (Yamagami) gave a mask to baby Gin so he would look more like a spirit, hoping to have him feel like he belonged. However the spell comes at a cost - if Gin comes into physical contact with humans, the spell would obliterate, causing his body to disappear. The Yokai that lived there saw that Gin was a harmless soul, and the Mountain God decided to save his life by casting a spell on Gin that would maintain his body, and that he would age a quarter slower than a normal human would. Gin's parents abandoned him in the forest when he was just born. He has a very naïve personality, mostly because he never had any kind of relationship besides with the forest spirits and Hotaru. As Hotaru grows, Gin's appearance remained almost the same because he ages a quarter slower than a normal human. However, he becomes comfortable in taking it off when Hotaru is present. Initially, he covers his face with a traditional Japanese yokai mask.

The story ends with Hotaru accepting her pain and moving on with her life.Gin possesses green eyes, pale skin & silver hair. The night ends in tragedy when Gin mistakenly touches a young boy who sneaked into the spirit festival, though before he disappears, he and Hotaru embrace and confess their love for one another. When Hotaru reaches high school, Gin takes her on a date to a festival in the forest hosted by the spirits. Upon reaching adolescence Hotaru begins to struggle with their budding romance and their uncertain future together, while Gin wishes he could touch and hold the young woman that Hotaru has become. As the years go by, Gin hardly ages while Hotaru physically matures and grows closer to his apparent age. Although at summer's end she must leave Gin to return to the city and her studies, Hotaru promises to return to visit him every summer holiday.
Hotaru returns to visit Gin in the forest over the next few days and they become friends despite the limitations on their interactions. She is found by a mask-wearing, human-like entity named Gin, who informs Hotaru that he will disappear forever if he is touched by a human. The original Hotarubi no Mori e shjo manga and subsequent film tell the story of a six-year-old girl named Hotaru Takegawa, who gets lost in a forest inhabited by a yamagami, or mountain spirit, as well as ykai (strange apparitions from Japanese folklore).
